The Prostate United Story

In 2018, after losing his grandad, Stephen Gilpin and his mate, former Rotherham United colleague Ross Burbeary, dreamed up Prostate United. They challenged themselves to run and cycle every day for a month. What started as a two-man adventure has grown to involve hundreds of staff from over 60 clubs including Manchester United, Newcastle United, Portsmouth and Luton Town.

Last year, fans took part for the first time, with over 700 participants answering the call up and helping raise over £500,000 since the challenge began.

"Prostate United has become much bigger than just a charity challenge; it’s become a community. We’re trying to bring football - from grassroots level up to the Premier League - together, with one aim of raising as much money as we can for the amazing Prostate Cancer UK.

If we can achieve £1 million, that will be an absolutely monumental effort. The money that we’re raising is going to improve prostate cancer research and the support and help that men living with the disease are receiving.” - Ross & Stephen, Prostate United Founders

From the pitch to the pavement:
Greg’s story

Greg Carroll, a Health & Wellbeing Officer at Doncaster Rovers, jumped at the chance to join Prostate United after his dad’s prostate cancer diagnosis.

“My dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2018, he had surgery and thankfully he was one of the lucky ones who caught the disease early enough. It was a really scary time for him and our family. The charity means a lot to me, and I loved doing the challenge.”

Greg was part of a 35-strong team at the club, including manager Grant McCann and assistant manager Cliff Byrne. Together, they raised over £18,211 and topped the 2023 Prostate United league table.

“I’m so proud of everyone involved at Doncaster Rovers and can’t wait to get going again this year. If you're thinking of signing up this year, DO IT! The sense of achievement when you finish it is amazing.”
