Meet the one-man team battling it out at the top of the Prostate United table

After his dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer, Kieran McGovern wanted to give back. But little did he know he’d end up competing with football’s biggest names in Prostate United 2026…

Football clubs dream of battling it out at the top of the table with the likes of Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool. But that dream is fast becoming a reality for one ‘club’ this October - McGovern United.

United find themselves in the top half of the 2026 Prostate United fundraising table; a feat made even more incredible because McGovern United is a one-man team.

Skippered by 31-year-old Kieran from Nottingham, McGovern United has raised almost £9,000 so far, rooting them firmly in the Premier League table alongside giants whose squads boast dozens of supporters.

Kieran’s Prostate United fundraising mission is a personal one, with his dad currently being treated for the disease after he was diagnosed this summer.

“Earlier this year, my dad, Thomas, was diagnosed with prostate cancer, which initially was a lot to take in. Whilst working, during my break I saw an advert on social media and thought this is a perfect opportunity to come together and turn some quite bad news into a brilliant coming together and show of solidarity,” he said.

“I couldn’t believe that after 24 hours we’d reached £3,000. I set the goal initially at £500 and last week we passed £7,000, which has come from friends and family. Also as we both work in construction in different sectors, we have both amassed a lot of industry peers and the support has been absolutely amazing. People who don’t even know my dad personally and even some who have a loose connection to me have been very generous so far.”

Despite football not being his favourite sport, Kieran is hoping to see the football community continue to back Prostate Cancer UK this October - and beyond.

He said: “I hope that the fundraising continues to grow and that everyone, no matter who you support or whatever your reasons are for starting, come together to really help spread awareness and raise funds for this amazing cause.

“I hope that throughout the month there will be opportunities for people to meet up, run, walk or cycle together and help each other along. The support has been amazing and it really has brought so many people together.”
