It's Sheffield united as Oxley leads Steel City run
With one of football’s fiercest rivalries set aside for an afternoon, staff from Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday came together last week in support of a different club - Prostate United.
The two clubs united for a special 10km run on Friday afternoon, led by BBC Radio Sheffield presenter and commentator Adam Oxley. Interim Owls boss Matt Hamshaw was among the runners who pounded the pavements from Hillsborough to Bramall Lane and back, proving that some causes are bigger than football rivalries. Joining Oxley and Hamshaw on the challenge were Sheffield United lead first-team strength and conditioning coach Nathan Winder, Rotherham United head of performance and medicine Ross Burbeary, one of the founders of Prostate United, and academy staff from all three clubs.
Oxley, whose father Glen died from prostate cancer in 2019, said: “Both clubs have been long-term supporters of Prostate United and when it comes to the challenge, the Blades and Owls have a joint rival - prostate cancer,” he said. “It was fantastic to see the clubs come together for a common cause.”
The run carried particular significance for Oxley and his family as his dad was a well-known figure in Sheffield’s sporting community, having played for Sheffield FC and Hallam FC. And while we enter the final week of Prostate United, the running will continue for Adam, who is training for next year’s London Marathon.
Adam said: “Dad was from Sheffield, an excellent player, and a proud advocate of football in the Steel City, so would have loved to see fans and staff come together in support of a common cause. He would also want to thank everyone taking part in the challenge for supporting men just like himself. The challenge means so much to me and my family."
After October, Adam's focus turns to the London Marathon in April 2027. You can support him by donating to his fundraising page - https://www.justgiving.com/page/adam-oxley-london-2027
